Smalltime's Tales and Travels

Long time
Well it's been a few since I've written. Been way more than a few actually. Things happen. A lot has happened. Seems to all cancel itself out though. I mean events happen then they get resolved and we're back to where we started. Which is where we are now. Sitting up at 3:33AM on the north slope as dawn is breaking and I'm writing.

All that aside I'm coming back east on May 13th for an unknown while. At least 3 weeks but possibly more. Things are more fluid now than they've ever been. Though I'm not entirely opposed to being fluid. Ah the sweet bliss of having some money in the bank and a good backpack. I've been reading too much Kerouac lately.

Midwestern Shenanigans
Tulsa is grinding on me. It's temporariness leaves me wanting to travel to somewhere else. It leaves me wanting to build some real friendships instead of these acquaintances. Also this city seems to be filled with an anger arising from its lack of itself. There's a lot of culture here, surrounding the oil industry, but it is culture that has no faces. There are no heroes here. There are no Paul Bunyans, or John Adams, or George Washingtons. It is a history that is inglorious. No one wants to honor those who raped this land. Not that we have a problem honoring cowboys who killed all the buffalo. Perhaps someone just needs to tell some stories about oilmen. Perhaps I'm that person. I'm going to try and write a story about an oilman that will bring some romance to the oilfield. Romance like there is in coal mining.

Aside from that, I was riding my bike through the streets of downtown the other night. I was on my way to see a band called, "David's Bandana." I had heard them the week before at a different venue Exit 6c. 6c was a dark bar with booths and tables. It's a great place to chill. Last night the band was playing at a pizza bar called Jo Mama's. They have a small bar but are mostly a pizza place. I got hit on by a girl with a scar on her face and black finger nails. We talked for a while about Tarentino films. I recommended to her Sukiyaki Western. He didn't direct it but played a role in it and it's very much of the style of film that he works on.

On biking down the sidewalk there was only one car on the road. It was some Rav4 looking SUV. I was just whistling to myself some Irish drinking song pedaling along. When out of the sunroof of the SUV some dude, a little younger than me pops up. He looks over and yells, "Hey fuck you, you queer!" I'm still pedaling, when I look back and yell, "What!" As in, "What the hell are you thinking you little punk!" I must have looked a little crazy because he looked scared. He looked like he really didn't know what to do so he sat back down in the car. A block later he pops back up, we've been passing each other at red lights for a couple of blocks now. His retort is, "Suck my dick!" I could tell by the timber in his voice that he wasn't really sure of himself. The crazy card is always a good card to play in altercations. Looking over at him, I toss on the craziest face I can think of and laugh like the joker, "What dick? Ahhahhaha!" Then I throw metal and stick my tongue out. His chuckle let me know that he was done and the SUV sped off into the night. Sometimes it pays to be crazy!

A Normal Thursday
Thursday night I heard that there was a band playing at some indie bar in downtown. While walking to the bus station, being a little early, I stopped in at an army surplus store. They had a lot of good stuff. I bought a new pair of gloves and a sharpening stone. Not a very remarkable start to the evening until I pulled up to the cashier. The cashier spoke softly using remarkably polite diction. His mannerisms we smooth and sure, but behind a massive scar from an injury that clearly broke several bones in his skull, you could see the fire in his eyes. Making eye contact, I realized that I wanted to me more like that guy.

The bus ride was uneventful. I was ease dropping to the other passenger's conversation which was pretty interesting. He had just gotten out of jail and had finally earned enough money for a cell phone. He was talking to his sister and bitching about how his family wouldn't send him any money or his cloths. Sometimes I feel like those conversations are pre-recorded in our brains. It seems like that dynamic is engrained in our humanity like our joy of big breasted women.

Down town was empty. I'm not used to walking city streets that are empty. There weren't even any cars driving around. Crossing the tracks in front of the Jazz hall of fame was interesting. Seeing a BNSF train rolling into the Tulsa yard made me want to hop on and go. Loneliness makes my heart want to take to the wind.

Walking into the Brady district, I noticed a strange mix of art studios, bars of several different flavors. There was "South of the border Club" across the street from "Club Majestic". In the middle there was "Lola's at the Bowery" a wine and smoke shop with a hearse parked out front. It was quite the section of town. Meandering up the street I passed by two red doors that had a sign over which read, "The Marquee". Later research showed that this was the place to go for cool alternative music. They've got a metal show coming up and I'm definitely planning on going.

Further up main street was where I was destined. A small bar called Soundpony. It with the Marquee were apparently where all the cool kids hung out. Going through the door the bar was a long narrow room. Bicycles and racing jerseys hung from the ceiling. It is definitely a place to go back too. I ended up shooting the shit with the bartender for a while and helped him load a keg into the bar. He was a pretty nice guy as was everyone in the place. The band was really good too. They came on around 10 and played some Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd covers. They were an all instrumental band and they reminded me of early Pink Floyd with stronger rhythm.

I decided that I had had enough to drink and wanted some fresh air. Walking around I saw an open sign on a building in the distance. Investigating I found that it was the Gypsy Coffee House. It was pretty cool. A sky scene was painted on the ceiling. I got served mint tea by a girl with half her head shaved. It was a good place to hang and relax.

There are new pictures up in the Gallery.

Tulsa
Well here I am in Tulsa. After journeying through the forests of oblivion I arrived. Worn and unexcited to start this course. My classmates are pretty good though. They're a fun bunch. Though they really won't leave me alone. They must be as lonely and starved for like minded company as I am. It's pretty funny. I've started cultivating the image that AK is much more badass than anywhere else. Which has some merit but isn't exactly 100% true. I mean there are certain location challenges for sure, but mostly it's just different from the way things are done down here in the south. It's funny how everything has become south now.

Aside from the horror of school again things are pretty good. It's nice and warm down here which is a good change. It makes hiking around much easier. There's a nice coffee shop around the corner but it's more new-age Christian than hippy which is a little be bothersome for me. I really can't see my self sitting around there too much. Oh well AK will be there for a while so there's no rush to get back to it too quick. I might as well enjoy where I am because I've got to be here.

There's new stuff up at http://smalltime.baconpalace.com/book/2009_01/ New stuff for a new year.

Almost done
Another two or three days left on this hitch. I'm ready for a change of scenery. This hitch has been whipping my ass. We haven't gotten anyone hurt or spilled anything yet, but that doesn't mean we haven't been close. We've been doing jobs that are not traditional cement jobs. That's to say that we've been using the regular cement equipment to pump all kinds weird stuff. We had to put 1000lbs of pea sized wax beads in 12bbls of 40#/gal gel. That was pretty fun especially when the beads stopped going into solution and I had to take the 3" suction hose up into the pump and stuck out all the extra beads. The suction hose has 25" of water vac pulled which really moves some water. I sucked out 3bbls of water and wax beads in under 15 seconds. That vac hose whipped my ass. The supervisor was laughing his ass off.

I've been running with one of the older supervisors. His nickname is old crow. He's a wiry little bastard originally from Wisconsin. Most people think he's a grumpy fuck but I get along with him just fine. Mostly because I know my shit and work hard, but also because I've spent a lot of years fucking shit up and now have a pretty good handle on how not to. Every day he says that I make a hand. Making a hand is analogous to saying that you helped out. It's a pretty good compliment, and surprisingly I'm not letting it go to my head.

I've been really earning a place up here. It's awesome finally not being completely ignorant of what's going on. We were relieving the day crew out on a job the other night. Their supervisor came out of the pump truck as I was looking at the piping we were using to connect to the rig. He got right up in my face and yelled, "If this job gets fucked up your ass is mine!" While he was yelling he was poking me in the chest like Uncle Sam. In return I grabbed his coveralls and yelled back, "If this job gets fucked up it'll be because your guys didn't rig it up right! And I'm going to have your ass!" Now mind you this guy isn't a little guy. I'm thinking he's pushing 300lbs and stands about 6'2" or so. You can imagine the irony of me trying to stare down someone that's 8" taller than me. He was just messing around and we had a good laugh about as he was walking to his truck.

There's some new work up in poetry. Not much yet, but it's the start of a new section and hopefully some improvement on the style. I've been writing a lot more in my moleskin than on the computer, so posted poems are getting a little thin. I'll try to keep it up to date.

Finally a Slow Night
Every night this hitch we've gone out on a job. It's been good to go and keep busy, but I was glad there was some shop time tonight. I mean we did have to drive out to the other end of the field to drop off a truck, but besides that it's been a slow night. It took us about four hours to get out to location and back. We got a little turned around there for a few minutes which ate up some time.

The other night we were talking about body fat. There are a lot of guys up here that are pretty heavy. It's an easy place to gain a lot of weight at because there's a lot of food and not much exercise associated with the job. Most of the younger guys make use of the weight room that we have to try and stay in shape. It's a pretty nice facility and I use it quite a bit. If not to get huge to at least stretch out and stay loose so I don't just atrophy. Anyway we're talking about body fat. One guy bought himself a tester and tested himself, and found out that he's got 16% body fat. Not outrageous for a guy, but he's not sporting a chiseled six pack either. I countered that I probably have less than 10% body fat. He laughed and said that we'd try out his tester next time we were in the gym.

10% body fat is really lean. I mean Olympic swimmers and athletes have down around 4-6% body fat so I'd be ok with 10%. I mean it doesn't really matter what it is as long as you're happy with how you look. So I grab the tester, it looks like a game controller with metal pads on the handles. It measures your body fat percent after you enter your age, height, and some other stuff, using the electrical impedance of your body. After it runs for a few seconds it comes back with an error. I think this thing is bogus. Everyone else in the room tries it and it seems to work fine for all them. I try it again and still the same error message appears. The guy who owns it is mystified and says he'll look up what the error means later. It turns out that I'm outside the measureable range for my age height and weight. I don't really know what that means but apparently there are some special settings if you aren't fat that will narrow the readings and allow it to read true. We'll see what it reads next time he's got it out. I'm guessing it'll be pretty low.

Back at Work
I have returned to my monastic adventures in the northland. This past week I revisited Boston and realized that I really miss being there. The whole thing was really familiar and fun. It was good to not wander around aimlessly trying to entertain myself. Though it did reaffirm my thoughts that my adventures are for the best. It was entirely too easy to fall back in to old habits and situations. I'll want that familiarity later in life but now I really need to find myself out here in the wilds of the world. I don't want to have to rely on others for my happiness. As much as I would hope my friends would always be my friends relationships are always temporary.

Aside from my new resolve to live longer out here, this hitch started with a bang. I've been a little stuffed up from the change in weather from the north slope to Boston and back. My first night up here I was looking forward to a quite evening with an early bedtime. Instead I was told that I would be going out on a job. The job pumped as designed but I caused a slight glitch early in the procedure. I was blowing cement to the batchmixer and thought I had it lined out pretty well. At one point the operator switched some plumbing in the unit adding extra length to the dry cement line. This caused the hose connecting the unit to the bulk truck to "pack off". This is where the dry material bridges across the line and the flow stops. This caused a little bit of a panic, but with the help of one of the more senior members of the crew we quickly resolved the issue and continued with the job. Not a star studded evening, but we got it done. Time for another.

Also there should be a new section of poetry up soon. Enjoy!

One week left
Well a little less now. Man this has been a long hitch. I'm working nights which is pretty wierd. I havn't seen the sun since I came up here. I've been getting up around 2pm after going to bed around 8am. Looking accross the tundra is like looking accross the bay from Gloucester to Boston. There are little cities of lights on the horizons it's pretty cool. It's funny knowing that if you were really screwed out there that you couldn't even walk to one of those places. They're only about 10miles away but you'd be frozen by the time you got there.

The nights have either been really busy or really slow. It seems there's no middle ground. I like when we're busy because it makes the time pass faster, but having a slow night lets me catch up on projects and e-mails. It's been a pretty good ballance this hitch.

Northern Lights
Finally I got to see the northern lights. It's been cloudy or snowing or I've been working days since I came to the arctic. Tonight was the first night that I got to see the northern lights. I heard they weren't even that good but it was still really cool seeing the green clouds moving across the sky. I really wish I wasn't in a rush to get back and could have stopped and taken a couple of pictures. We were in an area where there were a lot of wellsites pretty close together so it would have been hard to pick up the northern lights out of the sky. Pad lights are really bright. Sometimes looking across the tundra reminds me of looking out from the rocks in Magnolia toward Boston and seeing the lights. Well time for meetings then sleep then dinner.

Another morning
Morning comes with a fatigue that results from battle machines most people know nothing about in places that people don't want to go. Black coffee and cement dust fill my stomach as I'm warming up in a Kenworth. Small ionized sodium suns rise out of the blackness like millions of tiny suns. Calls from friends at 4am warm my heart and remind me that no matter how long the sun is gone for I'll always have good memories behind my eyes.

We were out on a job last night, pumping tons, literally tons, of cement very slowly. At one point I went to check to see if any cement had returned to the surface of the casing. I reached down and stuck my finger in the mud. I rubbed it between my thumb and forefinger, checking the consistency and composition. I then smelled the mud to see if there was any hint of cement in it. There was a group of people standing around the well waiting for the returns. All of them looked at me a little funny. The cementing supervisor asked me what I thought. I told him that it was still mud and not cement, but might be getting a little gritty. This would signal that the cement would be coming up the pipe. Everyone kind of laughed and asked what I knew about cement. The supervisor, who's been pumping cement for more years than I've been alive, quickly shut the group up saying that if anyone knew anything about cement it was me. One of the guys replied with, "Yeah the new guys always do know everything." To which the supervisor countered with, "No, he really does know about cement." Anyway it was pretty awesome to have someone like that show faith in what I've learned up here.

Twelve hours in the cold will really make you sleepy so I'm going to go eat some hot oatmeal and get some sleep.

Almost there
Well I've only got a couple of days left. Though the last couple days have been uneventful today and tomorrow should be rather exciting. Today we'll be working in the lab most of the day. We'll be working on a project to lower the freezing point of cement so that it can be used in permafrost zones. It's a project that the more senior engineer is doing to earn a promotion. It's part of a fixed step promotion schedule. I've already done my project to break out and get a promotion. It wasn't as in depth as what we'll be working on today but it was still pretty cool.

I've been playing a lot of chess lately. I was doing really well but the last two days have been pretty bad. I've got to work on a better strategy. My mind just wasn't in the game the last couple times I've played and that really ruined me. Hopefully after a few more games I'll get back into it a little more and develop some sight for how the board stands. I made some really silly moves in the last couple games.

I'm getting some boots made to custom fit my feet. This company in Spokane WA, called Whites boots is making them. You've got to trace out and measure your foot and leg and they custom make you a pair of boots. I'm pretty excited. I really hope they fit well. My other boots are nice but they aren't wide enough for my feet. I've got really really wide feet, like a duck, and finding boots to fit them is really hard. I think one day I'd like to try and make my own pair of boots. Maybe this summer after I get on a real rotation I'll do that.

I really want to get a boat too. I think a boat would be really cool. Not just any boat though. I want a sail boat. Of course I've got to learn how to sail but I think this summer I'm going to get a boat, teach myself how to sail and just go. I've got to think this out a little more, but I think it's a good plan.

Third Hitch
One week left till my next days off. As I've said before 21days is a long time. Though it doesn't really seem that I've been here for 4 months already. Time if flying by but not quite fast enough. I've got to work on not spending my money. I haven't really spent that much but I've got to try and save as much as I can.

My new goal is to buy a boat in two years and sail around the world. I figured I'd need about 150K to put this plan into motion. This works out to be about 2-3 years of hard work. Not a bad chunk of time. I'll hopefully be able to find a marina to hang around and learn how to sail and stuff at. I'm probably going to take some sailing lessons come summer. There's a pretty good sailing class down out of Kenai.

When I get down to town next I'm going to try and build a leather jacket. I think it'll be a cool project and hopefully I'll be able to finish it in a week or so then have an awesome jacket.

I feel like all I do is think up crazy ideas. I'm not really sure that spending so much idle time up here is good. Though I'm also not sure that it's bad yet either. I get a lot of reading done. I go to bed early and eat and work out. It's pretty awesome except for the being alone thing, which is growing on me.

To town again
I'm going to be heading down to town again on Thursday. I'm pretty beat after this hitch. The last couple of days I've been working nights and days. I sleep when the crews are changing out, because it's slow then. I've gone out on a couple of late jobs that were pretty fun. Mostly we've just been doing yard work. We've been moving trucks and snow to keep up with the drifts. Today is was so cold in the morning that ice was building up on my mustache. I can't remember the last time that happened.

It's starting to get a little chilly around here. It's been dipping down to below zero at night and heating up to around 15 during the day. Today was the first day in a long time that my toes got cold. It was pretty awesome. I mean I can't remember the last time I had to jump around and stamp my feet to get my toes to warm up. My hands were good though. The other night I was fine rigging up in just a tee-shirt, flannel shirt, hoodie and my coveralls, but after standing out in the cold for a couple of hours I had to put on my parka.

I think one or two more jobs and I'll really have this whole cementing thing down. Or at least running the bulk transport equipment and washing up. There were a couple little hiccup's on the last job, mostly because people were new to doing stuff, and we were all a little cold. I've really got to work on some more jobs so I can really learn the process.

Well I'm going to go back to sleep. The job tonight is probably going to go at around midnight and I want to be fresh for it. Also I've really got to start proof reading these entries. Some of them are pretty bad.

Crazy times
The crew I was working with last hitch got in yesterday. They're a great bunch of guys. The pumper, 'H' and I spent the morning flipping some pipe around that had been put in upside down in a batch mixer. The batch mixer is used for small jobs. It can make about 200 barrels of cement in the two pods. The pods are big tanks that you can mix cement in. The batch mixer is an enclosed tractor trailer that has the mixing skid inside it. It's pretty simple. It gets used to transport mix water and can be used to mix small cement jobs. We add a lot of chemicals to our cement. Some of the chemicals are dry adds and get blended into the cement at the bulk plant. Other times the additives are liquid and get added into the water that will be used to make the cement.

H was talking about his dentist while we were on break. I was taking a drink when he said, 'The guys a genius, like you'. His statement caught me so off guard that I laughed and the water I was drinking came out my nose and went everywhere. Of course there were other people around too. We all had a good laugh.

At someone saw a fox out the window running around in the yard. It was pretty cute. It was probably rabid but pretty cute all the same. Then the Ravens started swooping down on it. It was hilarious. I remarked that it reminded me of the poem, Le Corbeau et le Renard. No one had heard of it, and then I felt a little out of place.

Andrew mentioned that he'd like to start playing chess. I think it would be really fun to play with him. Hopefully I won't get beat. It's going to take a little while to get back into thinking about chess. It think it'll just be a good way to hang out and not just sit and watch TV. Watching TV sucks.

Well I've got to get going. I.ve got to finish my report today on the new chemical I was testing in the lab. I was told it was too long and that they like short reports around here.

Sleepy
Man am I tired. We had samples come in at 11 last night that needed to be run as soon as they got here. I was up till 12:30 finishing the tests. Then I got woken up at 3 by my roomate who was going out to Milline Point aka the Big House, because he had to grab his stuff. I got permission to sleep in till 6 but the cleaning lady woke me up at 5:30. The other lab tech should get here today so I should be able to get a good nights sleep tonight. I've been drinking mint tea with honey in it like it's whiskey. Man it's a good drink. Also I think my next large purchase will be a sailing catamaran. I'm thinking something like a 36' boat would be perfect. I think I could even live on it. I think I'm going to start small though with something like a 20. cat that I can get out on clear days or hit up the lake with. I really want something that I can pack a good weeks worth of gear in and go sail to like Kodiak on or at least the Kenai. Though it may be a little crazy to go out to those places in a 20' boat. It would be nice to find one that had an inboard so that if it got really nasty you could just turn on the engine and cruise. I'm probably not going to get any boat till late June so I.m not too worried about it now. They offer arctic sailing classes out of Homer so when I get some time off I'm going to enrole in one.

Up and running again
Thanks to Jim and Radio the website is back up now. I've added some stuff. There are some pictures from flying up to the slope and the snow and stuff over the last couple of days. I've been living in the lab since Thursday. I was there till 3am last night. I'm not such a huge fan of doing that. Then it was up at 5am to make sure shit wasn't exploding, which it wasn't. Then back to bed at 8 to be up at 12 to work the rest of the day. Tonight there's probably going to be a sample coming in around midnight. That won't be that fun. My roommate this hitch works nights which is really cool because it means I don't have to wake him up when I get up at midnight. I did wake him up when I got up at noon though. I felt pretty bad about it but what are you going to do. Moving on I'll be down in Anchorage next on October 16th. I'm planning on going back east on December 11 to stay for a couple of days. See what's going on and see some sun. The sun will set here around Thanksgiving.

Tu-ra-lu-ra-tu-la
I've been in town for a couple of days now. I'm starting to see the same people at the coffee shop that has become my main hangout. It's right in the center of town and the people there don't bother me when I hang around for hours reading. I'm slowly working into society up here. At least around the coffee shop. I found the rock gyms too. I climbed for a couple of hours today and realized that I was wicked out of shape. They also rate the climbs here a little harder than they do back in MA. I used to be able to do V4's and some V5's and now I'm lucky to finish a V1 or 2. I did end up going to the hard core gym though. I'm going to hit up the more rookie one tomorrow. I also started reading books by Andre Gide. My great great uncle? Maybe? I'm related to him somehow and there's a whole section of books about and by him in this used book store up here. They're pretty good and have a wide variety of stuff. Well batteries are dying so peace.

Southward bound
Off to Anchorage tomorrow. It.ll be good to have a day off. I.m looking forward to doing some fucking off and stuff. I.ve got a list a mile long of things to get before I go back up to the slope. I.m going to try and see some more of the city this time. I.ve gotten pointers on a couple of bars that sound pretty fun. We.ll see who.s around. I.m guessing that the university is back in session and there are people my age around somewhere. I.ve just got to go find them. Apparently there.s a bar that does amateur boxing every Thursday night. It.s like fight club but with gloves. I don.t think they.ve started yet but I.m going to give it a shot when they do. Hopefully I remember to get all the stuff I need down in town. I.ve got a list a mile long. I really don.t want to freeze to death next hitch. The ice is growing hard on the standing water. It.ll be really cold here in another week or two.

Almost done
Well I'm almost done my first hitch. The crew I've been running with is leaving tomorrow. I've got a couple of days left. I'll be heading down to Anchorage on Thursday. It's been a long time with no days off. I mean the work isn't back breaking but it is a pain. I'm getting really good at rigging iron, but I expected to pick that up quick. We'll see if I can keep myself busy for the next couple of days till I get out of here. I've got quite the list of stuff to do when I get to town so I'll be busy for a couple of days. I'm going to try and get out and see some nightlife too. I don't really know how much I'll see but I'm going to go looking. Time for some sleep.

Another day
Every day so far this hitch when we roll out after changeout with the night crew I say, "man it's a nice day!". And until today everyday has been cloudy and cold. But today it was really nice. It was right around 32 when we left the shop at 5:30 to go pump some cement. And wouldn.t you know it the sun was trying to come out. It wasn.t even as windy as it usually is. The wind really comes whipping across the tundra. There are no trees or mountains to slow it down. Apparently there are times when you have to wear a harness to go outside. I.m sure I.ll be that guy when the shit starts freezing. I.ve been working in the lab at nights. It.s pretty neat. We test all the cement before, and after, we pump it. Just to make sure it works and does the right stuff. There are tons of chemicals and different cement combinations. They can make cement do almost anything. It.s pretty awesome. Well I.m going to see what I can do today. It.s probably going to be really slow again. There aren.t any jobs till Doyon 14 gets on a well which won.t be for a couple of days.

The first real entry
I finished a 20hr day yesterday, and am up again at 4:30 to start another. Yesterday day I was working in the yard doing truck/trailer inspections for winter. After dinner I got pulled into the lab to test out a bunch of shit from Kenai. Some of the tests take a while and before I knew it it was midnight.

The artic is taking it's toll on the guys around here. We've had 2 guys quit this week. One was one of my bosses. This is kindof a bad time for it too. The busyest part of the year is comming up. Winter is called exploration season. BP and Conoco will be trying to drill wells way the hell out in nowwhere. We'll have to go out and live in a box for a couple of days at a time and wait to pump. It's going to be pretty interesting.

It also snowed yesterday. There was a dusting at one point but then it melted. We might have permanent snow on the ground before I get out of here. Only 6 days left.

Second Entry
Now for another test entry. We'll see how this one gets formated and go from there. I'm not really sure how I want this thing to work but I'm working on that too. Also it's snowing. I can't believe it's snowing. That's not a good omen of things to come.

First Entry
Well this is the first entry of hopefully many. It's been hovering around 30 degrees here. We've had a couple of frosts but nothing has stuck yet. They say it's going to though. Any day almost. They say there's usually a couple of feet on the ground by Halloween. We'll see. Cheers, -St
